I understand from the past that there is basically no chance that whatever I say will be something you find acceptable, but I enjoy answering questions, and so here I go.

There are a lot of important differences between Jesus living on in his disciples and Confucius living on in those who respect and follow his teachings. One of those differences it that Confucians do not make anything like the claims that Christians do about how this indwelling occurs or functions.

A second is that Confucius did not make the statements that Jesus is described as making about living in his disciples - he described himself as a teacher expounding universal moral laws, among other things.

I would qualify the way that Jesus is alive in his disciples as a mystery whereby those disciples are changed into more Christ-like beings. Part of the mystery for me is that it is not only the teachings that live on, but somehow, the Person.

And (in case you are interested or curious) part of why I characterize the resurrection the ways that I do is because theologically for me it is necessary that Jesus is accessible to us in the same way that Jesus was accessible to his first disciples after his crucifixion - particularly in Paul's case, since like him we have never met the biologically-living human being Jesus. If this is not the case, then it is hard to see how we can hope to be transformed by anything more than yet another astute moral teacher.Douglas Underhillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02215736448645573566noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7226481506470506962.post-73108732487992658352010-01-06T23:34:50.411-08:002010-01-06T23:34:50.411-08:00Perhaps - I will be re-posting more of my thoughts...Perhaps - I will be re-posting more of my thoughts from 3 years ago, and some of what is in the next 2 posts might clarify for you what I'm saying. Your last statement on the resurrection is...Doug,

Your last statement on the resurrection is quite interesting.

Do you believe that there is a substantive difference in the "resurrection" of Jesus vs. the death and subsequent "living on" of the ideals of any major religious or moral teacher? By your own definition, can it not be said that Confucius was "resurrected" in his followers? If so, would this be any different than that for Christ and his followers? If not, how would you qualify the difference?Adel Thaloshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14059435921761098111noreply@blogger.com
