Doubtful anyone with any level of knowledge will ever satisfactorily translate scripture for everyone.Aric Clarkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15241157655075444268noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7226481506470506962.post-52548316073742908162010-11-06T18:50:31.452-07:002010-11-06T18:50:31.452-07:00Clearly, this is a question for one of those PhD t...Clearly, this is a question for one of those PhD translate-y types.Douglas Underhillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02215736448645573566noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7226481506470506962.post-49461245085795336262010-11-06T18:19:24.620-07:002010-11-06T18:19:24.620-07:00I say, if the word does not really exist in Englis...I say, if the word does not really exist in English, then don't translate it.

"toevah" it is. It is situationally "disgusting". I like "taboo". ie: forbidden to US because of ritual laws in place to protect our identity. Not because of inherent immorality. They even recognize that things can be [toevah] for other cultures that are perfectly permissible to Israel.Aric Clarkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15241157655075444268noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7226481506470506962.post-52616235458900250402010-11-05T11:50:45.238-07:002010-11-05T11:50:45.238-07:00I think I'd want to maintain some of the sense...I think I'd want to maintain some of the sense of cultural purity - these things are detestable because they dilute our identity, and our identity is threatened as a tiny country surrounded by empires. If we trim our beard hairs, or eat food in a way that violates our philosophical categories of living things, it's one step closer to cultural death.

I'm trying to think of a word that fits, but living in an empire, it's hard.Douglas Underhillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02215736448645573566noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7226481506470506962.post-21745325071466398782010-11-05T11:39:22.381-07:002010-11-05T11:39:22.381-07:00when i publish my translation of the bible...
